The Eastern and Oriental

The living room area of our suite

looking into the bedroom area
the dressing table, which was in an impossibly large
walk-in closet area that led
from the bedroom to the fabulous bath

a portion of the fab bathroom
(the original toilets, in the lobby area still
boasted tanks mounted high on the wall and
were flushed via a long porcelain tipped pull chain!)

We spent the first part of our stay in Penang, Malaysia in Georgetown at the all-suite Eastern and Oriental Hotel. This 19th century hotel was founded by no others than the Sarkie brothers, and was a precursor to their more internationally recognized Raffles Hotel in Singapore. The E & O (as it is affectionately known) retains its colonial spirit to the core, although, now, we are happy to report, people of all races and nationalities are welcome guests, unlike when it's heavy wooden doors were first opened over a century ago and only those with a European linage were warmly welcomed.
