If a picture is worth a thousand words, a grainy Skype video feed must be worth exponentially more. Last night (8 pm Beijing Standard Time which is 8 a.m. Eastern Standard time) Eliza had a “conference” as she called it with her pal Lucy who moved from China this summer.
For about thirty minutes the two six-year-olds smiled, waved, and giggled at each other, much in the same way six-year-olds in the same room would...only these two were half a globe away.
Lucy gave Eliza a virtual tour of her room, and introduced her guinea pig and bird (which delighted them both by pooping!) Eliza flashed her toothless smile and showed a picture of her with a dolphin. Both were, at times, edged out by younger siblings anxious to get in on the action! Bea eclipsed Eliza on the screen with an extreme close-up of her furry Webkinz, and Toby needed to show us his car that could go all by itself.
In the end Eliza was very pleased with her first conference. She skipped happily up the stairs and fell asleep quickly, no doubt dreaming of her friend in America. It seemed to do for her heart, what a newsy e-mail from home or a Skype call with a friend does for mine.
Our friends and family are presently scattered all over the globe. Their pictures (or their thousand words—I’m happy with either) are a precious portion of our international experience.
