Iconic China

In reality modern China is more about concrete structures and modern clothing, the only birds we saw in our first years in China were tenacious and bossy magpies. Slowly, we're seeing more birds creeping into our back garden. We live in such an urban environment, that we only very seldomly catch a glimpse of a cow or a goat, most often when we're on the interstate bound for the airport. In the underpasses and green spaces beyond the highway we may see a goat hearder and his smallish goat tribe, or maybe catch signt of a black and white dairy cow hidden behind a courtyard wall in the small concrete compounds where China's modern farmers dwell.

But on this trip we saw the refreshing, and in some ways romantic images one conjours when considering China ...

Bamboo, rice paddies, those cute, wide rimmed straw hats w/the chin strap, water buffaloes, gaggles of geese and braces of ducks ... all of the icons of China, the things we imagine to be Chinese, we saw on this trip.
