Yangshuo

We are convinced that Kung Fu Panda was based on this sleepy, backwater town: white washed buildings with black tiled roofs mouldering in the mist, cobbled streets, and even a food vendor's cart that looks suspiciously like Po's noodle cart! Rocky limestone mountains jut up in the foggy distance, and everything seems like the iconic China we've dreamed up in our minds.

Only Yangshuo is no longer a sleepy backwater. It was once a backpacker's hangout... narrow streets, loads of vendors, cheap hostels and even cheaper beer. Today much of the small town charm remains, but the tourists are coming in droves. Throngs of people fill the riverbanks, small streets and shops. It was a wonderful pedestrian friendly experience and we fell in love with the little village of 700,000 people (Though with tourists that number easily swells to 1 million!)
