Its one of those events that makes you feel like you're doing something normal. That despite the fact that you live on the opposite side of the globe, your kids are getting some exposure to their home "culture." Except, that, perhaps its better. When you're far from family and friends you hold traditions dearer. Halloween wasn't such a big deal for us at home. We trick or treated at the neighbors, left a big bowl of candy on our front porch with the porch light on, and headed to the local fire department for chili with the community.
Here its morphed into more of a family event. We do make our obligatory appearance at the Expat Party... that frenzied event when kids and adults assemble in whatever costumes they are able to scare up in China. Lots of witches, and a few really creative over the top ensembles, and many of the classic fuzzy uniforms that have been schlepped to China, eating up valuable suitcase space, all for the few hours kids gather together in costumes that invariably become too hot!
We had a nice 90 minutes at the party before heading home for our own Monster Mash.
